Lookout

A New Series by James Dodds

Lookout is a new series of paintings by James Dodds, created for a book that will raise funds for UNICEF’s refugee relief work. The series marks a noticeable shift from the well-known linocuts of small ports and his calm, reflective boat paintings.

Instead of focusing on coastal life and craftsmanship, the Lookout works respond to current global issues. They reference the experiences of refugees travelling in small boats, the uncertainty of the early Covid-19 pandemic, and the wider impacts of war and displacement. The change in tone is clear in the subject matter as well as in Dodds’ use of colour and paint.

While different from his previous work, the series fits within his ongoing interest in how people live with and move across the sea — this time highlighting the harsh realities faced by many today. The book’s author and publisher will donate all income from the project to UNICEF to support refugees.
